Samuel Akayi

Designing the future of impact one font at a time

Samuel Akayi, from Karji Kaduna, Kaduna State, always had an interest in graphic design, particularly motion graphics, despite holding a BSc in microbiology. Without prior work experience, he struggled with a lack of proper knowledge about graphic design and how to earn as a graphic designer. He also lacked confidence in the designs he made.

Seeking to overcome these challenges, Samuel enrolled in the Engage Nigeria 2024 programme in Kaduna. The programme provided him with essential training in graphics design and animation. He also developed key skills in teamwork, team collaboration, strategic planning, leadership, and marketing. The program had a significant impact on Samuel’s career. He is now working as a design intern, where he has already worked on projects like creating flyers for the Kaduna State Government. This role has allowed him to apply the skills he gained during the program and contribute meaningfully to his community.

One of Samuel’s most memorable moments during the programme was when the facilitator explained the use of fonts and colour combinations. Reflecting on his previous designs, he realized how much he had to learn and felt reassured that he was in the right place to improve his skills. This particular class shaped his journey in the graphic design world, boosting his confidence and competence.

Graphics design, Animation, Video content production, and Marketing

He intends to use his skills to create a broader impact within his community and beyond.

He is grateful for the Engage Nigeria programme, which provided him with the skills, mentorship, and support he needed to advance in his career. Samuel suggests more publicity and physical public awareness before the commencement of each cohort and recommends supporting participants with the necessary tools and gadgets to help them grow in their acquired skills. He encourages young adults to take such opportunities seriously, as they can lead to financial independence and professional growth.
