Technology and Creative Opportunities for the Underserved

Favour Galadima

Favour went from cooking in a hub to analysing data in one.

Favour Galadima, a recent graduate of Food Science and Technology, worked as a cook in a restaurant located in a tech hub (Almara Hub, Arewa Ladies4Tech Partner Hub) in Kaduna. After concluding her HND, she had to support her widowed mother, leading her to take up the job at the restaurant. Despite being a novice in the field of data science, she admired the intelligent and well-dressed individuals who frequented the restaurant. In a conversation with her friend Abdulmaleek, who worked at the hub, she learned about the exciting world of tech. Abdulmaleek promised to connect her to a line of tech, and one day, he brought the news of the “ArewaLadies4Tech” program. Encouraged by Abdulmaleek, Favour decided to apply.

The journey as a participant in ArewaLadies4Tech began, though it wasn’t easy to balance work and the course. At times, she almost gave up, but she persevered, believing that there would be light at the end of the tunnel.

Skills Learnt

Data Analytics, SQL, Excel, Power BI and Power Apps

The most exciting moment came when she was selected for an internship at Natview Foundation for Innovative Technology. Here, she gained hands-on experience, applying what she had learned during the ArewaLadies4Tech program. Transitioning from a cook to a data analyst was challenging, especially with the financial and mental support needed. She faced a significant setback when she saved up to buy a PC to facilitate her learning, only for it to be stolen within 24 hours. Despite this, she didn’t give up.

Favour now envisions herself as a future instructor and facilitator in the field of data analysis. She looks forward to sharing the knowledge she has gained, especially during her NYSC service year. She expresses her gratitude to Google for the great opportunity provided by the ArewaLadies4Tech program.

Future Plans

I have a goal to secure a full-time position and aspire to become a leading data analyst in environmental sustainability. I intend to use my skills for community and broader impact.
